Stibbards & Sons

About Us

At S. Stibbards & Sons we pride ourselves on five generations of experience helping to arrange funerals in the local community. Our duty now remains the same as it was when the company began – to provide respectful and personal assistance in fulfilling the wishes of our clients and their loved ones.

Samuel Stibbards, the company’s founder, first trained as a wheelwright and carpenter but also gave legal advice to those in need. At the time it was common for local tradesmen to ‘undertake’ funeral arrangements in the community and Samuel was one of the tradesmen who did this. Over time the undertaking business grew and Samuel decided to turn his full attention to it, establishing S. Stibbards & Sons Ltd Funeral Directors in 1867.

A Tradition of care

The company has always been based at New Road Corner, with the premises expanding and adapting over time to meet the changing needs of the company. In 1925 David and Albert, Samuel’s sons took over the running of the business. The brothers began the expansion of the business, appointing trusted agents in the local community to arrange funerals on the company’s behalf.

Since then much has changed in the company’s structure, but S. Stibbards & Sons is still owned and run by direct descendants of Samuel Stibbards. We now have six branches: the head office in Hadleigh,  and branch offices at Leigh-on-Sea, Canvey Island, Southend, Shoeburyness and Hockley. We continue to provide care and support to our clients during a difficult time and exercise the utmost professionalism in helping them arrange a fitting tribute to their loved ones.

excellent careing & thoughtful

  • Ian Smith

A caring and thoroughly professional service from end to end. From our initial discussion onwards everything was made as easy as possible for us. Cars on time, good condition. The coffin, which was by no means expensive, looked excellent. The officiant proposed by the company was just what we needed. Those who came with the hearse made some helpful suggestions we’d not have thought of. All in all could be beaten in our view.

  • Courtney Gibbs

Everyone was very helpful and made an unhappy time as easy as they could. The service was professional and courteous. Thank you from the whole family.
