Of the materials traditionally used for memorials, Granite is by far the hardest wearing stone. It is completely impervious to water and therefore stands the test of time in all weathers conditions. Granite is available in a wide range of colours and shades. Black, grey and red granite are most popular, but pearlescent shades of green and blue are also often used.

The white stones: Marble, Nabresina, York and Portland are also in common usage. They have a special traditional quality which matures with age. The white stones are porous and can be prone to  discoloration and alge growth in certain conditions, however, they are easily restored to their natural beauty should this occur.

Most public and private cemeteries will permit memorials carved from all of these materials. Churchyard are usually quite restrictive, preferring non-reflective natural stone such as Nabresina and York.

The white stones are easier to quarry and carve and are therefore less expensive when used for memorials.

Granite stones are much harder to work and are consequently considerably more expensive to buy. However, they have much greater durability and are quarried in an extremely wide range of colours. Take time to look in your local cemetery before you order to be sure of the right choice.
